EFFECTIVELY FISHING THE VARIOUS BEATS ON THE EKALUK RIVER

DO NOT WALK OVER THE FISH.

THE EKALUK RIVER FISH ARE ALL “SHORE HUGGERS”….

SHORT PIN-POINT CASTS DO THE TRICK.

Lake Rapids; Cast into the “nasty/heavy water” on the far side. (Why fish hold there I don’t know, but they do).

The shelf; unless you see something sitting around the big rock in the middle, pass it by.

Big Bend; deep slow water, chock full of lakers (mostly small), pass it by

Upper 2000; top to Lower 2000, very good fishing along the “boulder line” close to shore.

Once passing the last (big) boulder, lay a couple of long casts into the slick oily water towards the far side.

Lower 2000; lots of channels, the whole pool can be waded.

Careful if/when you hook a good fish here, he’ll go through the canyon faster than you can think. Get out of the water and run over the top of the big hill!

Canyon; Spot fish from the top of the big hill.Tricky wading, be careful.Bottom end of Canyon, superb holding water in “mini area” close to shore. Also the “white rock” in the middle…

Rocky Run; Very good fishing from top to bottom (to Red Cliffs).Several deeper channels mixed with sand bars, do not wade far out! This run can accommodate three, even four anglers…

Red Cliffs; Very small area over the rock line close to shore. Superb resting area for the fish after running the Big Rapids. Careful when wading, the current “pulls” pretty good here.

Big Rapids; Impossible to fish.

Bottom of Big Rapids; too many lakers…

Between Bottom of Big Rapids and Island Run; deep slow water, difficult to fish properly.Holds lots of fish though…

Island Run; good fishing from top to bottom (close in)

Robert’s Pool; you’ll spot the odd fish hanging out here… (this is where you go across to reach Island Run

Between Robert’s Pool and Top of Camp Run; 300/400 metres of very good fishing in shallow boulder strewn water.

Top of Camp Run; three big sand island with channels going whichever way. Interesting area. Good for a full day’s exploration fishing.

Camp Run; Heavy/fast water best fished from shore. Lots of fish holding a foot or two off the shore! Stop fishing when passing “Bill’s fish rack”

Home Pool; Can be good dry fly fishing if/when you see new fish porpoising.

Pool “Other Side” Superb fishing at the tail-out of the Big Rapids. Good fishing upstream as well, tight in to the shore.

Don’t go downstream Home Pool, can possibly be the odd bear around towards the sea. We have our “burn barrels” downstream of Home Pool, bears like that!

REMEMBER, DO NOT WALK OVER THE FISH!
