Difficult week in Umba with 29 salmon caught. Warm and sunny and lots of wind affected the fishing. Small flies were used to tempt the reluctant salmon; Red Butt and Green Highlander on floating lines seemed to be the only medicine that worked. However there were some highlights worth mentioning, Of course Roland Rogenmoser’s 20-pounder, and Allan from Israel who caught his first Atlantic Salmon in Long Pool of 16 solid pounds. This was celebrated in true style with the consumption of a very large glass of vodka! Congratulations 🙂 Also, camp manager Jan Delaporte did a ‘mini survey’ of the number of salmon parr in the river (Krivetz) – the abondance is astonishing and bodes well for the future. On another note it was also encouraging to see that a few large fresh (some sea liced) fish were taken this week. That being said the fact is that most rivers on Kola were very much affected by the extremely early snow runoff this year, some rivers have had very little water (not Umba due to its big lakes) and in general the fishing has been affected all over the peninsula.
All the best,
Jan De La Porte
