Dear all Salmon Junkies
We are very proud that we have been offered some finest Springer fishing in Scotland March 20 – 27 and March 27 – April 3 on the River Dee. Upper Blackhall is very unique place and perhaps the most beautiful, classical and peaceful beats on the River Dee. You and 3 other anglers will have full exclusivity for the entire week.
Upper Blackhall is perhaps the most beautiful and peaceful beats on the River Dee and is situated 4 miles West of Banchory on the South bank. The beat fishes 3 rods and is opposite Woodend at the top and the infamous Cairnton beat at the bottom (Cairton – The well known mentor of Grease line fishing A.H.E. WOOD beat). There can be no better fly fishing water anywhere, and the 3 miles beat produce fish in both high and low water conditions throughout the season. Access to the beat by car or by walking, and any wading is generally not difficult making the beat suitable for experienced and novice anglers. As with the remainder of the Dee, the beat has seen increased catches over the last decade and 2010 was the best for 30 years.
SPRINGER FISHING – DEE
The River Dee is internationally famous for its salmon fishing, and especially so for its multi-sea winter spring salmon, with anglers coming from all over the world to fish it. The Dee is one of the earliest producing rivers in Scotland and takes great pride in the fact that it produces more spring fish caught to the fly than many other rivers in Britain.
THE BEAT – UPPER BLACKHALL
The beat fishes 3 rods and has 15 named pools and it fishes equally well in low and high water. Beautiful trees, prolific wildlife and an absence of public roads make for perfect peace. There are 2 fishing huts with wood burning stoves and 2 shelters. All but 3 of the pools are accessible by car from the riverside track. There is a full time ghillie, Raymond Sinclair, who has looked after the beat for 12 years. The Ghillie Raymond Sinclair is about to start his 20th season on the beat. His experience and skill are immediately evident and he holds a vast knowledge of the beat and fishing generally.
The fishing in March/April is 12 ½ – 15’ Spey rods in combination with intermediate lines and sink tip.
THE ACCOMMODATION – WELCOME HOME
The Stables are some 1.5 miles from the beat – 5 min drive – on private road. The house has 4 twin bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, WC, sitting room, kitchen/dining room, rod/drying room. It is fully furnished and equipped. The cleaning is done by the ghillie’s wife, Jenny, who lives immediately next door. She is cooking the best breakfast and prepares a picnic lunch and Joan Sinclair is available to cook suppers. Both ladies are very experienced and eager to help. Welcome home and a total holiday can be enjoyed 100%.
CONSERVATION – CATCH & RELEASE ONLY
In common with the remainder of the river and most other UK rivers we have a conservation code to which we ask all anglers to abide by. All salmon are released. We encourage anglers to support the Middle Dee Project (Raymond Sinclair is a committee member) which was started in 1997. They run a successful hatchery and have made significant improvement to 2 tributaries in the local area. They also have an ongoing research and monitoring programme which is proving valuable nationally.
